Hello again art friends and friends of art. It’s lovely to be back at it after an unplanned hiatus. The pause was due to the demands of other projects and a bunch of travel.
This month, we’re looking at works of the interior. By this I mean depiction of literal spaces, but as we might infer from the well-worn truism “all portraits are self-portraits”, there are inevitably traces of an artist’s interior topography in their rendering of space and volume.
As always, I found more great works than I can fit into a newsletter. I’ll post the rest on Instagram over the next few days.
If you’re new here, consider subscribing. And, if you’re not so new here, please spread the word. It’s great to see the audience for art and artists grow.
Dining Room with Rembrandt
Benjamin Frederick
Oil on canvas
USD$895
I love work that is figurative but teeters on the edge of abstraction. It’s just this side of a brilliant composition of shapes and tones. My only question is; where’s Rembrandt?

Ilka Kramer
Limited Edition Photograph
$ 805.00
This is wild image with an Escher-esque affect. I can’t quite tell of it’s a double exposure, a collage, or just an effect of the composition in the camera. Regardless, it’s endlessly intriguing.

Oil Painting, 1970
USD$556
Often when I’m digging around the Internet for compelling art I come across works of which virtually nothing is known. But this one is just bonkers in the best way. I feel like many young, contemporary artists are trying to achieve what this work is bringing.

Askew #86
Barbara Kemp Cowlin
USD$720
What I love about art is the many ways that artists have discovered to express space. Superficially, this is composed of flat forms, yet somehow I feel a sense of space and volume, and even place.

Balance Painting
Evan Wilson
Painting, Oil on Canvas
USD$545
The more I look at this, the more excited I get. I really love little gems like this. In particular, the contrast of thickness of paint between the lights and the darks. I mean, look at those chunks of light. Just a perfect square of painterly virtuosity.

Interior Scene With Gentleman At A Table
Orlov Yuriy Aleksandrovich
Oil on canvas
USD$$634.77
Uh… wow? I have so many feeling about this one. So many great painting traditions are colliding here: Caravaggion tavern scenes, Hopper solitary vibes, something Dutch, all while being entirely Russian. I think this is a hell of a painting.

Here’s the Instagram of an artist of the same name. I have only medium confidence that it’s the same artist. Maybe someone out there speaks Russian and can help us out?
Untitled Painting
Lorang-Andre Henriksen
Painting, Acrylic on Canvas
USD$990
For me, the rectilinear composition and stripped down forms really set the stage for the absurd elements here. Despite the simplicity, this has real weight.

Boyd Graham
USD$750
Is this is an interior, or an exterior of an interior? Being on threshold of two spaces, and the geometric rendering of the volume is intriguingly unsettling.

Interiors-Reflecting Upon
Theresa Vandenberg Donche
Acrylic, oil stick, ink, spray paint and pencil
USD$1000
Kablam! There are some technical aspects of this work that I normally do not like. But in this case, I really really like. So interesting!

Plant with Mirror
Delilah Ray Miske
Oil on canvas
USD$600
This is such a neat idea: the mirror adds a distorting, surreal aspect to what might be a straightforward interior scene. I also love the colors.
