Hi there. I am mighty glad to present you with this here twenty-second edition of You Should Own Art. Before we get into it, I’d like to say a quick word of thanks to those of you who reached out recently. In case you missed it, I had a bit of a moan in the last edition about the challenges I was having pulling myself out of the Summer doldrums. Some very kind souls sent little vibrations of encouragement and I’ll tell you, they had an effect. Now, I’ve got a bunch of energy and some big ideas. Thanks, friends.
Until about an hour ago, I really didn’t have a concept for this edition. That’s not exactly true, my lack of concept was the concept. But, as I was poking around the enormous number of links to galleries, websites, and instagram profiles that I’ve gathered over the past couple of years, I found myself collecting works that were…a lot. Either in the subject, or in the execution, the works all had an intensity about them. So, new plan!
One last thing, the audience for this here publication continues to grow, and it’s really neat to see. It’s also super cool that it’s largely through art-loving people telling other art-loving people about it. I’d surely be mighty grateful if you continued to spread the word.

Anja Salonen
Archival Pigment Print on Hahnemühle Museum Etching 350 gsm, edition of 25
16.5 x 21.7 inches

This is really compelling. The bent reality and the ambiguity of the subject’s expression give you lots to consider.

I spent an hour going through the work’s by Nick available on the After Nine Contemporary site. It was tough to pick one. I just really love the suggestion of architecture and the intense color. I sincerely encourage you to check out his other works. I would really like to see his process.

Langdon Graves
Caligo ink on paper

This is so interesting. There are are an infinity of narratives that be told here. As the sequence changes, the interpretation changes. It’s a bit tarot, and a bit Rorschach.

Kate Steciw
Archival Pigment Print
23.6 x 29.5 inches
£500 (£417 outside UK)
As you may know from a past edition, I am a recent convert to the art of the collage. One of my favorite magic tricks that artists routinely pull is to transfigure familiar objects so that they become something else entirely. This has the same effect on my perception as the most bent of M.C. Escher’s images.

Gregory Clewlow
Archival pigment print on photo rag baryta, from an edition of 25

I keep trying to figure out what I’m looking at. I feel like it’s something quotidian that’s been rendered cosmic by the artist.

Matthew Hansel
Archival Pigment Print, edition of 50
23.6 x 29.5 inches

Yup, this is bonkers. But, holy smokes, the mastery it represents is out of this world. It draws you in just as the famous works by Hieronymus Bosch do - even if you don’t know if you really want them to. Endlessly fascinating.

Masanori Ushiki
Watercolor on paper
10.5 x 15 inches
USD$300
This is a deeply weird drawing from a series of deeply weird drawings. And I love them all. Impossible to pick one. These works take the tropes of manga-style character design and do something really original and somewhat unsettling with them. Check out the whole series.

Annesta Le
Marker and acrylic on paper

Perhaps a little quieter than the previous couple of works, I really appreciate the composition. Particularly the grey on grey framing of the bright center. This would be really nice to have look at everyday.

Well, we’re going to wrap the edition up with this banger here. I’m really into the two and three dimensional effects smashing together, the renaissance references, and the total demolition of artistic tradition. And the colors, love the colors.
